Course Outline
Day 1: Workflows and the AI Component
Introduction
- Determining when to automate, when to use an AI step, and when to deploy an agent.
- n8n in context: comparing cloud versus self-hosted deployments and their implications for data control.
n8n Fundamentals
- Core concepts: workflows, nodes, triggers, and executions.
- Transferring data between nodes by dragging fields, eliminating the need for syntax.
- Analysing execution logs to identify and resolve issues.
App & Data Connectivity
- Utilising webhooks and form triggers.
- Working with spreadsheet, email, and calendar nodes.
- Managing credentials and authentication for external services.
- A step-by-step walkthrough of the HTTP Request node.
The AI Step
- Integrating a model into a workflow.
- Crafting prompts to ensure reliable outputs.
- Achieving structured output and automatically correcting malformed responses.
- Classifying and extracting data from emails, forms, and documents.
Decision Logic & Actions
- Implementing branching logic using If and Switch nodes.
- Incorporating approval steps: requesting human confirmation before action.
- Recording results in spreadsheets and dispatching notifications.
Hands-on Lab: First End-to-End Workflow
- Tracing a journey from an incoming request to a classified, logged, and routed outcome.
Day 2: Agents and Operations
Agents
- Agent architecture: model, memory, and tools.
- Choosing between a fixed workflow and an agent.
- Granting agents access to company documents and spreadsheets.
Action-Oriented Agents
- Distinguishing between read-only and write-capable tools.
- Setting system prompt rules: mandatory fields, prohibiting fabricated data, and preventing duplicate records.
- Stress-testing agents by attempting to disrupt their logic.
Channels
- Configuring a chat interface for internal use.
- Linking the agent to a single messaging platform.
Reliability
- Setting up error workflows, retries, and alert notifications.
- Reviewing logs and execution history.
- Monitoring and controlling model and execution costs.
Data & Privacy
- Assessing what data is transmitted when a model is invoked.
- Exploring self-hosting and local models via instructor demonstration.
- Utilising a checklist for review with IT or legal teams.
AI-Assisted Workflow Building
- Using an AI assistant to draft a workflow structure.
- Reviewing the draft: understanding node functions, data sources, and empty-state handling.
Final Project & Next Steps
- Participants finalise and present a workflow featuring an AI step and an agent applied to a personal business process.
- Establishing a maintenance plan and identifying future automation opportunities.
Deliverable: A functional workflow incorporating an AI step, an agent linked to corporate data, robust error handling, and a review checklist.
Requirements
- No programming background is necessary.
- Basic familiarity with web applications and spreadsheets.
- A clear understanding of at least one repetitive process within your current role.
Target Audience
- Professionals in business, operations, and customer-facing roles.
- Team leaders and process owners.
- Non-technical staff aiming to build automations and AI agents using corporate data.
